Battles

Updated 3/30/2026

Battles in Zpet are short, turn-based fights. They are a key way to grow your pets, earn coins, and get items.

Turn-Based Battle Basics

Each side has a 3 by 3 grid. You and your opponent take turns until one side loses all HP or you forfeit.

Each turn, you get three shape choices. You pick one shape, then the turn resolves right away.

Shape effects follow a repeating row and column pattern across the 3 by 3 grid. Good placement matters.

Battle outcomes:

1. Defeat the enemy to win.
2. If your HP reaches 0, you lose.
3. If you forfeit, you lose.

Player, enemy, and story battles can start with different HP values.

Battle Strategy

Simple planning can make a big difference.

1. Place items where your likely shapes can hit more tiles.
2. Watch coverage patterns, not just one strong tile.
3. Mix attack and defense so you do not run out of health too fast.
4. Track buffs and debuffs each turn before your next move.

Defense details to remember:

1. Shield can absorb damage before HP is hit.
2. Armor can reduce incoming damage, then get worn down.
3. Some effects stack, so timing matters.

Understanding Battle Items

Only battle-usable items can be placed in battle. If an item cannot be placed, check if it is marked as battleable.

Common battle effects:

1. damage: Deals direct damage to the opponent.
2. armor: Adds flat mitigation.
3. shield: Adds temporary HP.
4. damage_reduction_pct: Reduces incoming damage by a percent, up to a cap.
5. armor_break: Ignores or cuts through some enemy armor.

When effects stack, turn order matters. Building a loadout with both damage and protection is often safer than using only one style.
